2. Tip of the Month:  Are Log Homes Energy Efficient?

With home energy costs on the rise, two of the most frequently asked questions at log home shows are, "Are log homes energy efficient? What is the R-value?"  We explain that the method used to measure the efficiency of a log structure is call Thermal Mass and not R-values.

Here are the two simply defined:

R-value:  Measures a materials resistance to the transfer of heat from one side to another.
Thermal Mass:  A material's capacity to absorb, retain and slowly release heat over time.

Logs have a relatively low resistance to heat transfer, but they do posses the ability to absorb and retain heat in their cellular structure.

In the 90s the Log Home Council of the National Association of Home Builders was able to define two things.  First, logs have a thermal mass because of their cellular structure, bulk and thickness.  Second, thermal mass offers significant energy saving benefits because it releases heat back into the home when the temperature drops.

The first study focused on heat loss through the log wall compared to a stick framed wall.  The finding was that energy leakage occurred in the same places as a stick framed home, around window and door frames, at the peak of the cathedral ceiling and at the top of walls.  The conclusion that leakage was not due to the log walls.  The second study concluded that the thermal mass of the log wall does significantly reduce energy use for hearting in cold climates.

As a result, the Nation's Model Energy Code recognized the energy conservation benefits of thermal mass.  This recognition was the goal of the Log Home Council, a part of the Building Systems Councils of the National Association of Home Builders.

This summary of the studies is interpreted by The Leelanau Log Home Company.  For more information please go to:  www.loghomes.org and www.nahb.org

5.  Website Spotlight:  www.loghomelinks.com

Are you looking for a website that offers a variety of content about log and timber frame homes, plus related products and services?  Plan to bookmark this one.  Loghomelinks.com website offers hundreds of links to information and state that "You can find everything you will need to build and furnish your dream home."  After spending several hours on the site, I have to agree.

The website is fairly well organized with navigation topics listed down the left side.  Many of the topics are categorized by state to help narrow your search. There is no search function, but the website is easy enough to find what you are looking for.  The bottom line, this is an excellent website to do your research and get educated -- taking you one step closer towards building your dream home.

Enjoy!
