Frequently Asked Questions About The Original Lincoln Logs

Can I modify one of your floorplans, or adapt a design I already have?
The Lincoln Logs design and engineering staff has worked with thousands of homebuyers who've had the same questions and concerns that you have. We can make modifications to a Lincoln Logs plan; work with existing plans from other sources, and design homes completely from scratch. Either way, your home can be as unique as you are.

We can adapt your ideas into the Lincoln Logs building system. Lincoln Logs will prepare specific prints for each customer's own home so that you can build your home the way you want it. The Leelanau Log Home Company LLC and Lincoln Logs staff will work together with you to make your dream home a reality.

What is included in your home packages? Do you offer a turn-key project, or will I need to hire a contractor?
Our packages include the materials needed to build your weather-tight shell. That includes the logs and sealant system, log siding for gable ends, premium windows and exterior doors, complete roof system, interior wall partitions, tongue & groove pine siding for gables and dormers and hardware to assemble the home. You or your contractor will need to prepare the site and build the foundation and first floor deck, before your log home package arrives. You or your contractor will also be responsible for the interior materials such as heating and/or cooling, electrical wiring, plumbing, kitchen cabinets, flooring and other finish materials.

The Leelanau Log Home Company LLC is a Lincoln Logs authorized dealer, licensed builder and general contractor offering full construction services from shell-in to a full turn-key project and everything in-between. We can also help you find a builder/contractor in your area. Some of our customers choose to be their own general contractor and subcontract out the various phases of their project. Contact us so we can discuss the construction option that will work best for you.

How much do your homes cost? What will be my total cost to build?
There are a lot of variables when it comes to costs, and costs may vary by region of the country. Our log home packages range in price from $14,110 for a 384 square foot cabin to over $200,000 for a 4,000 square foot sprawling contemporary design. Typically, full turn-key construction costs are about three to four times the package price, so an average $60,000 package could cost between $180,000 to $240,000 or more, plus the land, site preparation and foundation costs. Again, your total cost may vary depending on such things as land, site preparation, local labor rates, interior finish materials and applications you choose, and the amount of work you choose to do yourselves.  Please contact us for a no obligation consultation.

I have already purchased land. What services do you provide to find the right floor plan that will fit my land?
One of our many services that we provide our clients is site evaluation and site planning. We’ll walk your land with you and offer expert advice on the style(s) of home that will best fit your land, lifestyle and budget.  Go to Our Services to learn more about what we can offer you.

How much exterior maintenance is required for a log home?
The amount of exterior maintenance will vary depending on the location and position of your home on the site. Typically you may have to recoat every 3-5 years, but there are many variables at play such as UV exposure, finish product quality, quality of preparation and application, log moisture content, etc. We can advise you on quality products to protect your home and we offer maintenance options at attractive rates.

Can we add onto an existing log home?
Lincoln Logs has a staff of talented designers and engineers. We can work with you to design an addition that will fit your growing needs and budget.  Contact us today for your no-obligation consultation.

How much shrinkage can I expect from a Lincoln Log product?
The shrinkage is controlled by a combination of the locking system, drying process and quality of Lincoln’s logs. An allowance of ¾ inch is made above all windows and doors; this far exceeds expected shrinkage given all construction procedures are followed.

How energy efficient is a log home?
Unlike regular wood framed structures, log homes are rated in “Thermal Mass” as opposed to “R” values. The “Thermal Mass Effect” relates to the ability in which heat transfers through the walls of a building is delayed by the wall mass. Log homes may be expected to perform from 2.5% to over 15% more energy efficiently compared to an identical wood-framed constructed home, considering annual purchased heating and cooling energy needs.  Go to www.loghomes.org to read more about log home energy efficiency.

We have a stick-built home; can we make it look like a log home?
YES!  The Lincoln Logs has a staff of talented designers and engineers. We can work with you to design the desired log home look that will fit your budget.  As licensed builders we can also transform the interior of your home to match the log home exterior.  Contact us for a no-obligation consultation.

I plan to have a contractor build the weather-tight shell and then I will finish the interior myself. How long will it to complete the weather-tight shell?
Typically it will take 2-3 months to complete the weather-tight shell. Of course there are several variables that come into play, like the size of the log home, weather conditions, size of the building crew, etc. Contact us for a one-on-one planning session to discuss your project.

Can I add a Lincoln Solarium to an existing home?
Absolutely, the Lincoln Solarium is engineered to fit a new or existing home.

Is Lincoln Logs kiln or air dried?
Lincoln Logs start with top quality timber, and then air-dry them at their facility. (Unlike some log companies), they start with bug-free timber so there’s no need to kiln-dry. Air drying is a natural process that offers a log with fewer and less excessive checks. All of our logs have been independently certified by Timber Products Inspection, Inc. (T.P.I.).
